2012 Ida Lewis Junior Sailing Program
Big Boat Sailing

Objective:

Introduce intermediate to advanced sailors to fundamentals of big boat sailing (24ft and larger).

Duration: 1 night per week for 6 weeks
Previous Knowledge/Experience:

Must have at least an intermediate level experience with sailing.

Age Group:

14 - 18 years of age

Boat:

J24s, J80s and a variety of other large keel boats.  Sailors will be exposed to sailing a variety of boats in an effort to create well-rounded sailors who are confident in any vessel.

By the end of this class, you will be able to do the following:

Rigging:
  • Rig and de-rig any large keel boat
  • Understand the sail controls and how to optimize the sails
  • Sailing:
  • Drive
  • Mainsail trim
  • Jib Trim
  • Bow
  • Spinnaker trim
  • Pit
  • Capsizing and Safety:
  • Get to and stay in the safety position
  • Get to and stay in a heave-to position
  • Recognize the signs of incoming bad weather
  • Knots and Seamanship:
