2012 Ida Lewis Junior Sailing Program
Day Sailing (previously called Adventures)

Objective: Introduce any level sailor to intermediate and advanced sailing skills to build strong, competent sailors for life
Duration: 3 days per week
4 week or 8 week session
Previous Knowledge/Experience:

Some previous sailing knowledge

Sailors must be able to complete a short swim test

Age Group:

11 - 16 years of age (at least 100 lbs)

Boat:

Hunter 140s, 420s, Lasers, J22s. 
Sailors will be exposed to sailing a variety of boats in an effort to create well-rounded sailors who are confident in any vessel.

By the end of this class, you will be able to do the following:

Rigging:
  • Rig and de-rig a hunter with a partner
  • Rig and de-rig a laser on your own
  • Rig and de-rig a 420 with a partner
  • Rig a J22 as a team
  • Understand the sail controls and how to optimize the sails
  • Sailing:
  • Be able to follow the leader
  • Sail in a straight line on a reach and tack
  • Sail in a straight line on a reach and gybe
  • Sail upwind on a beat
  • Sail downwind with a spinnaker
  • Sail without the rudder
  • Sail backwards
  • Launch from the dock
  • Dock the boat safely
  • Launch from a mooring
  • Sail onto a mooring safely
  • Anchor and pull up anchor
  • Capsizing and Safety:
  • Capsize and recover
  • Get to and stay in the safety position
  • Get to and stay in a heave-to position
  • Recognize the signs of incoming bad weather
  • Knots and Seamanship:
  • Plot a course for a day sail and complete that course
  • Learn proper VHF radio etiquette and use
  • Tie an 8 knot
  • Tie a cleat knot
  • Tie a square knot
  • Tie Bowline
  •
