Duration:
3 days per week
8 week session
Previous Knowledge/Experience:
Successful completion of optimist intermediate sailing class or demonstrate the ability to sail comfortably at all points of sail in a range of wind conditions.
Sailors must be able to complete a short swim test
Age Group:
At least 9 years of age (up to 125 lbs)
Boat:
Optimists - Sailors must own their own optimists. (Ida Lewis club boats are not used for this course)
This group occasionally sail J/22s and 420s for fun and experience.
By the end of this class, you will be able to do the following:
Rigging:
Rig your sail and boat for performance in all wind conditions
Sailing:
Sail efficiently at all points of sail in most conditions (calm to moderate to heavy winds)
3 minute dinghy start
5 minute race start
Roll tacking and gybing
Penalty turns
Capsizing and Safety:
Get out of irons
Capsize and recover
Get to and stay in the safety position
Knots and Seamanship:
Learn the basics of the Racing Rules of Sailing
Identify and understand the government marks of channels
Learn how to tie down your boat for travel on your car or on the trailer
