Summer 2009 Goals
1. To increase a sailor's comfort and confidence in the boat and controlling the boat through boat handling and the ability to control the boat.
2. A basic understanding of the points of sail and proper sail trim for each.
3. A more fine-tuned understanding of the parts of the boat, what they control, and how to rig for different conditions.
4. An introduction to basic racing strategy and rules with an emphasis on sportsmanship.
5. To create an atmosphere that is fun, team-oriented, and supporting so that sailors push each other to improve and encourage one another's efforts.
If any intermediate Opti Sailor is interested in racing a green fleet regatta in NBYA, please let your coach know. For more information about the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association, regatta dates, and registration please go to NBYA.org
7/7/09 Update:
In the past few weeks, the Optimist Intermediate class has been working on understanding the wind, points of sail, and boat handling through multiple drills including tacking on the whistle, practice races, and follow the leader. The sailors have progressed quickly and become comfortable controlling their boats in many wind conditions, allowing us to make long distance sails to Fort Adams and Mackeral Cove when weather allows. On poor weather days we have focused on knowledge of sailing through games such as Sailing Jeopardy and Hangman, and building 3-D Opti Models to increase awareness of boat parts. In future weeks we will continue to stress advancing skills and boat handling, as well as partaking in fun on-the-water games and long distance sails to new places.
Thursday 7/9/09, The Opti Intermediate class is planning on sailing to get ice cream, or to Mackeral Cove for a swim(dependent to weather). Please prepare for either adventure by bringing some money for ice cream, a towel and change of clothes for after swimming, water, sunblock etc...
