2012 Ida Lewis Junior Sailing Program
Opti Beginner

Objective: Introduce new sailors to the fundamentals of boats and sailing in light and calm breezes.
Duration: 2 1/2 days per week
4 week or 8 week session
Previous Knowledge/Experience:

No previous knowledge necessary
Sailors must be able to complete a short swim test
Age Group:

At least 7 years of age (up to 125 lbs)
Boat:

Optimists
By the end of this class, you will be able to do the following:

Rigging: Rig and de-rig an optimist on your own
Sailing:
  • Be able to follow the leader
  • Sail in a straight line on a reach and tack
  • Sail in a straight line on a reach and gybe
  • Launch from the dock
  • Dock the boat safely

    Capsizing and Safety:
  • Capsize and recover
  • Get to and stay in the safety position
    • Knots and Seamanship:
  • Tie an 8 knot
  • Tie a cleat knot
  • Tie a square knot
