2012 Ida Lewis Junior Sailing Program
Opti Intermediate

Objective: Improve fundamental sailing skills and introduce intermediate sailing skills in light to moderate breezes.
Duration: 2 1/2 days per week
4 week or 8 week session
Previous Knowledge/Experience:

Sailors should be able to sail comfortably on a reach, tack and gybe on their own.

Sailors must be able to complete a short swim test
Age Group:

At least 8 years of age (up to 125 lbs)

Boat:

Optimists

By the end of this class, you will be able to do the following:

Rigging:
  • Rig and de-rig an optimist on your own
  • Rig boat for a variety of breeze conditions
  • Sailing:
  • Be able to follow the leader at any point of sail
  • Sail upwind on a beat
  • Sail around a triangle course
  • Sail around a windward/leeward course
  • Navigate a crowded area
  • Pick up a man overboard
  • Start and stop the boat
  • Sail with tell tales
  • Sail backwards
  • Sail and Bail
  • Capsizing and Safety:
  • Get out of irons
  • Capsize and recover
  • Get to and stay in the safety position
  • Knots and Seamanship:
  • Tie an 8 knot
  • Tie a cleat knot
  • Tie a square knot
  • Tie a clove hitch
  • Tie a bowline
  •
